Farewell message by Abouna Antoine Naddaf

A word of appreciation from Shweir Community to father "Tony"

Dear friends,

Father Antoine Al Nadaf came to Shweir in 1983 to serve as the Catholic priest. He left lately Shweir to another post after 23 years of working as a shepherd for all Shweirieh, who loved him and whom he loved. In his last speech, he reminded us that his first steps as a clergyman was in Shweir. I am not going to translate to you what he said in St. Peter’s church in Shweir, but I like to point to few facts:

First: Shwierieh love everybody who loves Shweir and work for her.

Second: No one comes to Shweir, to work, live or visit can stop himself from loving the place.

Third: He who leaves Shweir for any reason, thinks twice before doing that and comes back whenever he can.

Shweirieh gave Father Al Nadaf, Bouna Tony, a farewell party after the mass. They thanked him for the good work, gave him souvenirs and wished him long life, health and success in the new post.

One more thing to add. Father Elie Khunieser is our new Shepherd . We wish him all the success in serving Shweir, especially he is a Shweiry and the first to come, after the last Shweiry 100 years ago, in this post.

This Sunday we celebrated "Corpus Christi Day" "Khamis Al Jasad", I am sending you few pictures for our Mughtarebeen, who aren't coming this summer, to feel as if they were with us walking all the way from Shweir to Dhour in the afternoon (6:30pm); sharers in the prayers and in watching the beauty around.  Riad

You know we always talk about Shweir this and Shweir that and the Eid and the Summers and...and...and.. But in reality I miss Shweir the most is when I see a picture or two about things that reminded me of how life was truely like in the heart of Mount Lebanon. Honestly, If I was working in Lebanon, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, even if I was woring in Tripoly

Nabil just forwarded me pictures that he received from Shweir..... The Occasion, "Khamis al jasad" or "Intiqal al 3adra" (maybe its the same). That's when the Nawbeh and every body walk from Shweir to Dhour stopping at all Churches and shrines along the way, and then a great celebration in the Saha...... I always used to wait for this. Man, times like these are few and best enjoyed when lived in a small town.... Don't get emotional on me George

Anyway, the pictures were great and they show how clean the air at 1250 m above sea level.

The Saha looks great, and Clean. The new utility poles are a welcome change.... I still don't like the old buildings that are blocking Jabal Sanin...They are killing the $1,000,000 View.

Hey it was good to recognize the people in the pictures...Samer, Nabil, Bashar, Wissam, George, and there was a picture of my brother Najib, you look good ya bou Lias.... Miss you all ya Shweirieh.

Riad the pictures of the Lizan were so refreshing, Shweir need to have a lot more of this beautiful plant.

I absolutely Loved the pictures from our home...THANK YOU Riad for sending them

I noticed that the Circle in the Saha has that red Dirt plowed and ready to be planted with FLowers, way to go guys, letd have them ready for the Eid

The Matars will sure miss going to Shweir this summer, Keep it that way till next year

Subject: Easter

Briefly I will describe last week ceremony for Easter in Shweir and Dhour.

Palm Sunday: All Shweirieh, in Shweir and else where and even neighbors, were in Dhour Saha and "Al-Mughalis" The Savior Church to celebrate the Palm Sunday. For the first time in Shweir history this occasion took place in Dhour Church and not in Shweir as it used to be. The church was decorated especially for the occasion with white roses. Before the ceremony ended, twelve young Shweirieh entered the church carrying Palm and wearing clothes from Jesus time, each six from one side of the church till they
reached where the priests were. Walking after the priests and the twelve followers, the crowed walked out to find at the door a huge basket full of "Kaek AlSha3nineh", cookies, and another one full of "Kurban", church bread, for everybody to take.    And for the first time we saw one representing Jesus wearing Jesus cloth ridding a donkey, " atan", and the twelve followers each one wearing different cloth, as the Saints used to wear, carrying Palm. The crowd was as many as during Eid Al-Mughtarebein.
They walked around the Saha and through Dhour streets for the "Ziah".

Good Friday: At 5 pm Shweirieh met near Al Zugaeb houses, Shweir Noubeh with Shweir Flag in front of all then Shweirieh Shabab wearing customs representing the twelve followers of Jesus and carrying Jesus body to be buried in Mar Butros Church. We walked through Suk AcShweir to the church where ladies on both sides were throwing flowers on everybody crossing the street. The Church was decorated in the best way for the occasion to honor Jesus death.
The Shweir Band played music and girls and boys sang songs for the occasion for half an hour, they were excellent. After that they withdraw, with their instruments, from the church and the "Rutbat defn al Maseeh " started.

Happy Easter for all of you.  We wished you all were here.             Riad

Subject: 3id Hamelat al Teeb

Last Sunday, May 4, 2003, the Is3af group, ladies and gentlemen, young and "young", had their Annual Mass in the Savior Churche "Al Moukhales" in Dhour Saha. "The Perfume Carrier Ladies" 3id, ( 3id Hamelat al Teeb), is the 3id that the Is3af celebrate yearly as their
founders day. What the Is3af does, in their daily work, is like what the "Ladies" tried to do with Jesus, add "Perfume" to our lives.

Father Elie Khnieser helped Father Toni Nadaf, and Father Shalhoub gave a speech. Queen Christina Sawaya, Is3af members, and many Shweirieh were in the Church. After the Mass, we all went to the lower floor of the church to cogratulate the Is3af, where the Fathers, Dr.Ghosun, Christina and Mr. Korban cut the cake. Soft drinks, cokies (home made by the Is3af ladies), etc. were surved.
We wish the Is3af many happy returns with more succes in their work for helping us when their help is most needed.
