Margaret Mary Grimsley |
Hi, I have just learned that my grandparents hailed from Shweir. They arrived in the USA around 1900!They of course went through Ellis Island, seperately. We think my grandmother travelled to USA under the name Habib. She wanted to be a catholic nun and her brother possibly with the name Moses Habib was a priest in Shweir Lebanon. My grandfather had the name of either Ahad or Moussa or Moosa. I am very proud of my Arab heritage and would love some guidance on how to research their past in Shweir.

I am doing my family tree and am looking for any information on my great grandmothers father Alexander Abotomey. I have found some information on Alexander Abotomey his father is listed as Bashira or Bashana on his death certificate and it has his mother listed as Elizabeth he is buried in Broken Hill with his wife Gertrude.
I was wondering if anyone has any record of who Bishara and Labeeby’s Abotomey's children where and if Alexander was one of them?
Any assistance anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated as I am extremely interested in finding out our history.

Hi - my grandfather Seba Nahra came from Shweir. Initially he emigranted to Australia (1880s ?) and married there. He had a daughter Melbina(?). Later he moved to South Africa(1905 ?), changed his surname from Nahra to Joseph, and married my grandmother Annie Rouanna. I have been told that his brother moved to the USA in the 1920s. Any information as regards the Nahra family will be greatly appreciated.

My grandmother, Tamam Ataya, came from Shweir. Among her relatives are the famous singer, Marie Ataya, who now lives in Danbury CN, USA, and the very large Corban family of New Zealand. She married Abraham Ziady of Kab Elias here in the US, and had three children, Chick, Toufic, and my mother, Edna.
I'm happy that this site exists to keep track of the community of Shwier.

Laura Morie |
My grandfather Fred Morie, emigrated ultimately to Alberta in the early 1900's from Shweir, they first landed in Ellis Island (US) and then travelled to St. John's in New Brunswick, Canada and then made their way to Edmonton, Alberta.. The family ended up with different last names because of the language difficulties, so some are Murray, some are Morie. They left behind their beloved Shweir and I was very delighted to find you on the web. I grew up listening to stories my Grandfather told be at bedtime. I will continue to visit your very interesting pages. Many thanks, Laura
